This past summer, the stars finally aligned and I was able to arrange a visit with Emmanuel Reynaud, the idiosyncratic proprietor of Châteauneuf's most storied estate. It had been numerous years since he had agreed to a visit from a writer for our publication—he explained that he had been put off in part by aspects of our previous ownership—so it was with great anticipation that we—I was accompanied by my Michelin manager, Mickaël Moiroud—pulled up in front of a rather nondescript building in the wilds of the appellation, down a small, marked lane from Vaudieu. Was this the place? The woman hanging laundry outside the dwelling above confirmed it was.

Reynaud was atop a tractor working the deep sandy soils between the (mostly) old Grenache vines—individual plants are replaced as they die, and he explained that frequent plowing was needed to control competition from weeds—but he joined us at the winery at the precise hour of our appointment. We then walked among some of the vines closest to the winery while he outlined the peculiarities of the 20 small parcels that make up the estate. The property is surrounded by woods, which Reynaud said can mean air temperatures as much as eight degrees cooler than in nearby vineyards. The generally north-facing exposition and fine, pale-hued sands (which contain marine fossils) further contribute to the freshness and elegance of the terroir. "Nature speaks here," he said, summing it up.

Heading into the building, he presented tank and barrel samples of the latest vintage (2022), most of which won't be made available to the public for up to 10 years. Evidently, the bottled stocks aren't kept on site. Current releases (depending on the market) are the 2011, 2012 and 2013, in line with Reynaud's opinions on when the wines reach drinkability. It was still an enormous pleasure to try the 2022s, which hold enormous promise. The wines of Pignan—a separate Châteauneuf terroir that contains more clay and stones than Rayas—and Fonsalette—a Côtes du Rhône estate located about 30 kilometers to the north—are also made at Rayas, so our tasting included those wines as well.

These are singular, terroir-driven wines that any serious wine lover should taste at least once in their lives. A look at retail pricing around the world reflects the incredible demand for these treasures, despite what I'm told is reasonable pricing at the domaine. Barring a personal connection to the estate or hedge-fund money, the best way to enjoy these wines is to find restaurants in the region that carry the wines, where pricing will often be more reasonable. Reynaud seems to genuinely want wine lovers to enjoy his wines and is able to exert more influence on local restaurants than on far-flung retailers.
