 The outstanding 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition is a full-
 bodied, peppery wine that oozes the character of Provence with
 its notes of lavender, herbes de Provence, and sweet black cherries
 and raspberries. Some licorice, saddle leather, and salty sea
 breeze notes also make it into the character of this full-bodied,
 concentrated wine which is silky enough to be drunk now or
 cellered for 10-12 years.

 The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul (85% Grenache
 and equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault) tips the scales
 at a prodigious 15.8% alcohol. Half of the wine is aged in
 neutral wood foudres and the other half in tank prior to being
 bottled unfined and unfiltered. The sources for Mon Aieul are
 three vineyard parcels with vines averaging between 75 and 87
 years of age. The 2001 is much more structured and backward
 than the 2000, 1999, or 1998. The color is a dense purple, and
 the bouquet offers sweet but reserved aromas of blackberries,
 raspberries, crushed rocks, and kirsch liqueur. lt possesses
 superb texture, enormous body, and tremendous purity as well
 as overall symmetry. The tannin is high, but it is largely
 concealed by the wealth of fruit and extract. Give it 3-4
 years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 15-18.

 The 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve des Deux Freres elicits
 "wows". Aged 60% in neutral wood foudres and 40% in one, two,
 and three-year old Burgundy barrels, this 2001, which tips the
 scales at an awesome 16.2% natural alcohol, boasts an inky/purple
 color along with a sensationally pure bouquet of blackberries,
 graphite, acacia flowers, licorice, and sweet kirsch liqueur.
 Unctuously textured and full-bodied, with high tannin as well as
 a closed personality, this prodigious yet fabulous Chateauneuf
 du Pape is another potential legend in the making. lt requires
 3-5 years of cellaring, and should keep for two decades. The
 texture, purity, and magnificent concentration suggest tiny
 yields, old vines, and non-interventionalistic winemaking. By
 the way, this wine represents a selection of the finest lots
 in the cellar as the sources are the same as for the Cuvee de
 Mon Aieul, although a large component of Deux Freres is from
 the Usseglio holdings in the sector of Chateauneuf du Pape
 called La Crau. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2022+.

 The three cuvees of Chateauneuf du Pape in 2005 are, as one
 might expect, backward, tannic, and needing bottle age. Even
 though the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition needs 3-4 years
 of bottle age, this wine(aged 80% in foudres and 20% in tank
 and made from a blend of 80% Grenache and the rest Syrah
 Mourvedre, and Cinsault) exhibits a dense ruby/purple color
 and a big, sweet nose of tree bark, blackberry, raspberry,
 and cherry with licorice, damp earth, and a hint of Provencal
 herbs. The wine is long, full-bodied, but still tannic and closed.
 Anticipated maturity:2011-2018.

 The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul, which
 spends 90% of its time in tank and 10% in old barrels, has
 turned out even better in bottle than it performed from cask.
 Basically 100% Grenache in 2004, this is clearly better than
 the 1999, which l own and drink frequently. lt exhibits a deep
 ruby purple color and a wonderful sweet nose of black cherry,
 raspberry, licorice, spice box, and roasted herbs. Voluminous
 for a 2004, with full body, beautiful texture, a long, heady
 finish, and loads of fruit, glycerin, and decent acidity, this
 wine should drink beautifully for 12-15+ years. There was no
 2004 Reserve des Deux Freres as all of that wine was put into
 the Mon Aieul.

 The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul is 95% Grenache
 and 5% Syrah aged 100% in tank prior to being bottled. This wine
 always comes from the three best parcels of the estate - Les
 Serres, La Crau, and Guignasse. This hugely concentrated, muscular
 wine is very powerful, excruciatingly tannic at present, but
 super-rich. Yields were a low 22 hectoliters per hectare because
 of the drought, and this blockbuster, muscular, virile style of
 wine needs at least 5-6 years of bottle age and should keep for
 two-plus decades. It is certainly a terrific Mon Aieul, but for
 those who are very patient.

 One of the vintage's most profound wines, the 2003 Mon Aieul
 has a dense purple color as well as a glorious nose of
 blackberries, licorice, smoke, and some roasted meats and dried
 herbs. Amazingly opulent, even voluptuous, with extraordinary
 purity, a huge tactile impression on the palate, but not
 heavy by any means, this is a stunning Chateaunuf from ancient
 vines made with 95% Grenache and rest Cinsault and Syrah.
 Anticipated maturity:now-2020+.

 The limited cuvee 2003 Deux Freres, which is aged 40% in tank
 and 60% in one-, two-, and three-year-old barrels as well as
 large demi-muids, is essentially the same as Mon Aieul, but
 additional press wine is added. This beefs the wine up to an
 even more extraordinarily concentrated character. This is
 another of the Chateaunuf du Pape of teh vintage, a wine
 of remarkable length and prodigious levels of richness.
