A 35-acre vineyard situated on limestone and sandy/clay 　soils, it is generally a blend of 70% Merlot and equal parts 　Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The blockbuster 2005, 　which tastes even better than it did last year, boasts an 　opaque purple color as well as aromas and flavors of chocolate, 　espresso roast, melted licorice, and blackberry liqueur. Huge 　muscle, richness, power, and fruit, a terrific, multilayered 　texture, and a long, tannic finish are accompanied by a natural 　alcohol of 14% plus. This blend of 80% Merlot 　and 20% Cabernet Franc achieved 13.5% natural alcohol, and 　enjoys every state-of-the-art winemaking technique, most of 　them Burgundy-inspired (especially the cold pre-fermentation 　maceration, malolactic in barrel, and aging on its lees with 　plenty of batonnage). A top-notch success for proprietor Alain 　Raynaud and his wife, Francoise, this deep rubylpurple-colored 　effort exhibits sweet aromas of spring flowers, blueberries, 　and raspberries. At the urging of 　consultant Stephane Derencourt, Prissette keeps crop yields low 　(27 hectoliters per hectare), and practices such winemaking 　techniques as cold soaks, month-long macerations, malolactic 　in barrel, and aging on lees. The 2,000 cases produced each 　year are gobbled up by enthusiastic consumers looking for wines 　that will be drinkable during their first 10-15 years of life. 　The 1995 is just now hitting its peak, so l suspect Rol Valentin's 　aging potential is even longer. The 2005 reveals sweet black 　cherry notes intermixed with espresso roast, black currants, 　dried herbs, and spice. The vintage's fresh acidity and 　moderately high tannin come through in the mouth, but they 　are well-integrated, and the wine's admirable concentration 　balances out the formidable structure.
