One of the most monumental St.-Josephs ever made is the 2003
St.-Joseph Vignes des Hospices. Visitors to Tain I'Hermitage
and the village of Toumon can see this vineyard at the top of
the hill overlooking Tournon. Along with Chapoutier's 2003
Les Granits, it is the greatest St.-Joseph I have ever tasted.
A 20-25-year wine, it possesses the character, concentration,
and potential complexity of a top Hermitage. Crushed rock,
scorched earth, smoke, black currant, plums, and fig aromas
soar from the glass of this inky/purple-colored 2003.
Full-bodied, intense, and layered, this spectacular effort
possesses a seamless integration of acidity, wood, alcohol,
and tannin. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring and drink it over
the following two decades.
