 したワインが飛ぶように売れていきました。安価で素晴らしいワインが飲めるゴー

 という強気の価格が続出して参りました。

 さらに、前評判の高いシャトーは割当数を前年買い付け数の50%に減らし、第1回
 目の価格を提示してきました。このため、プリムール市場はさらにヒートアップし

 This great St.-Estephe estate has turned out a succession of
 brilliant wines. The 2005, a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon
 and 40% Merlot, has put on weight over the last year. An opaque
 ruby/purple hue is accompanied by a sweet nose of earth, smoke,
 cassis, and cherries as well as a textured, full-bodied mouthfeel.
 While the tannin is high, there is beautifully sweet fruit underlying
 the wine's structure. It will require 8-10 years of cellaring
 after release, and should drink well for three decades.

 Only 44% of the production made it into the dense ruby/purple-hued
 2005 Latour, a powerful, backward, 12,000-case blend of 87% Cabernet
 Sauvignon and 13% Petit Verdot and Merlot. As l wrote last year,
 this classic effort is built for the ages, and is largely destined
 to be drunk by our offspring rather than anyone over the age of
 50 today. Complex aromas of crushed rocks, graphite, black cherries,
 creme de cassis, new saddle leather, and dried mushrooms are still
 tightly wound. The wine is full-bodied and powerful with exceptionally
 high tannin combined with zesty acidity, and laser-like focus.
 lt will require 15 or more years of cellaring. l still prefer the
 2003, but administrator Frederic Engerer says this "is more Latour."
 Anticipated maturity:2020-2060.

 for my taste, it comes in slightly behind their extraordinarily

 A superb Mouton, the 2005 is composed of 85% Cabemet Sauvignon,
 14% Merlot, and a dollop of Cabernet Franc. Under the new
 administrator, Philippe Dalhuin, the strictest selection of any
 recent vintage was instituted (64% of the production was used),
 and the 2005's 13.5% natural alcohol is one of the highest ever
 achieved at this estate. While not as good as the 1986 or 1982,
 the 2005 is a brilliant wine offering a classic inky/blue/purple
 color along with notions of creme de cassis, licorice, and sweet
 oak. Full-bodied, powerful, and exceptionally pure with good
 underlying acidity as well as a boatload of tannin, it will
 approach full maturity between 2015-2020, and should keep for
 40 years.

 The work that Alfred Tesseron and his winemaking team have done
 at this estate since 1994 is remarkable. At this fabulous terroir
 just south of Mouton-Rothschild, Tesseron has made major
 investments, and instituted incredibly severe selections in both
 the vineyard and winery. The result is a succession of extraordinary
 wines. It is diflicult to know whether the 2005 Pontet Canet will
 ultimately eclipse the hedonism and density of the flamboyant 2003,
 but it is unquestionably a stunning effort. lnky/black-colored
 with a classic Pauillac perfume of licorice, black currant liqueur,
 graphite, cedar, and spice box, it is full-bodied, with magnificent
 concentration, formidable tannins, and an Arnold Schwartzenegger-
 like structure (when he was 25 years younger). This backward,
 formidably endowed 2005 will require patience.

 quality at this property. Firm and structured, with a deep ruby/
 purple color and hints of graphite, black currants, licorice,
 smoke, and earth, it possesses a textured, rich, pure center,
 strong tannins, and real elegance as well as length. Four to six
 years of bottle age will be required, and it should last for
 20-25 years.

 to upgrade it.
 The 2005 Ducru Beaucaillou is a 10,000-case blend of 67% Cabernet
 Sauvignon and 33% Merlot (they used to produce 18,000-20,000 cases).
 It is an exceptionally powerful wine with a dense purple color,
 superb intensity, and a beautiful, sweet nose of spring flowers,
 raspberries, blueberries, graphite, and creme de cassis. Full-bodied
 with fabulous concentration, exceptionally high tannin, good
 acidity, and massive layers of richness that build incrementally
 on the palate, this monumental effort is more structured than
 their outstanding 2003. It may be the finest wine produced at
 this estate since the 1982 and 1961 Ducrus.

 The 2005 Leoville Las Cases is revealing more power, weight,
 and richness than it did last year. Made from 37% of the total
 production, it is a blend of 87.6% Cabernet Sauvignon and the
 rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc. A dense ruby/purple hue is
 accompanied by abundant amounts of sweet black cherry and
 blackcurrant fruit, pain grille, graphite, and crushed rock-like
 characteristics. The high tannin levels and freshness noted a
 year ago remain intact, but the wine has filled out in the middle,
 revealing greater richness as well as fuller body. lt appears
 set for an incredibly long life. From its birth, Jean-Hubert
 Delon has compared the 2005 to the 1996 and 1986 produced by
 his father, and that has become even more evident as it has
 aged in barrel. This classic St.-Julien should be at its peak
 between 2018-2050+.

 exhibits a sensational perfume of charcoal, burning embers, underbrush,

 (much like the 2000 was at the same stage), with full body, admirable
 purity, and several boatloads of muscular tannin, this St.-Julien
 is built for 50-60 years of cellaring. lts purity and precision are
 typical of today's winemaking, but Barton is certainly not making
 a wine for near-term gratification. This is another 2005 that will
 require enormous patience. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2065.

 but, wow, what an excruciatingly high level of tannin.

 Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot,
 boasts aromas of lead pencil shavings, incense, charcoal, spring
 flowers, blackberries, cherries, and espresso roast. A pure,
 fresh, full-bodied palate reveals moderate sweet tannin, a
 sensational, lush texture, and a blockbuster finish, but they
 do not compromise the floral elegance of the Margaux appellation.

 Another profound effort from Haut-Brion, the 2005 (a 9,000-case
 blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, and the rest
 Cabernet Franc) has bulked up to the point that it is fair to compare
 it to the great successes of 1989, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 2000.
 A dark ruby/purple color is followed by a nuanced, noble bouquet of
 blue and red fruits interwoven with wet stones, unsmoked cigar
 tobacco, scorched earth, and spring flowers. The wine is full-bodied,
 pure, and complex as well as exceptionally elegant with laser-like
 precision. The tannins are still serious and substantial, and in that
 sense, this is a completely different style of Haut-Brion than the
 opulent, silky-textured 1989 and 1990. As I have written before, it
 comes across as an improved, more concentrated and structured
 version of the 1995 or 1998. Patience will be required for this

 While not as concentrated or monumental as this estate's 1989,
 the 2005 is a fleshy, racy, hypothetical blend of the 1994 and
 1998 Haut-Brion, only better. It boasts a gorgeous perfume of
 citrus oil, lime, honeyed grapefruit, flowers, spicy smoke, and
 earth, followed by terrific definition, purity, and full-bodied
 power, but it is not as masculine as its closest competitor,
 Laville Haut-Brion. The 2005 Haut-Brion will be approachable

 There are slightly more than 5,000 cases of the 2005 La Mission
 Haut-Brion, a blend of 69% Merlot, 30% Cabemet Sauvignon, and a
 touch of Cabemet Franc. While there is little difference between
 La Mission and Haut-Brion's terroirs (their vineyards are only
 separated by a two-lane road), La Mission possesses more fat,
 texture, and intensity. An enormously endowed wine with huge
 tannin and structure, the 2005 offers a quintessential Graves
 bouquet of burning embers, charcoal, blackberries, truflies,
 black currants, and a meaty character. Reminiscent of the 1989,
 with more structure as well as a longer window of drinkability,
 the 2005 may be a modem day, improved version of a vintage such
 as 1955, which was well-endowed, very tannic, and took a long
 time to come around. While fabulously full-bodied and unctuous,
 the 2005 will not provide much charm in its youth. It needs 8-10
 years of cellaring, and should age effortlessly for 30-40 years.

 It appears consumers can't go wrong with any 2005 with the word
 Pavie in its name. This outstanding terroir, elevated to Premier
 Grand Cru Classe status in St.-Emilion's reclassilication, is
 run with impeccable attention to detail by Nicolas Thienpont,
 who is assisted by winemaking guru, Stephane Derenoncourt.
 The 2005 Pavie Macquin may turn out to be this duo's finest
 wine to date. This is a moderately large vineyard (37acres) for
 the area, and the blend tends to be 70% Merlot, 25% Cabemet Franc,
 and 5% Cabemet Sauvignon. A black/purple color is accompanied
 by aromas of charcoal, burning embers, crushed rocks, sweet,
 pure, blueberries and blackberries, chocolaty creme de cassis,
 and licorice. lt possesses massive concentration, phenomenal
 levels of tannin, and good acidity, but it is even more backward
 than either Pavie or Pavie Decesse. A modern day elixir that
 should prove to be monumental in 15-20 years, it will last for
 40+ years.

 1945 Larcis Ducasse will attest to how great this cuvee can be.

 per hectare. This stunning effort reveals one of the most
 extraordinary aromatic displays of the vintage, offering up notes
 of sweet roasted herbs, jus du viande, black olives, espresso
 roast, creme de cassis, and kirsch liqueur. Extremely full-bodied,
 opulent, and lavishly textured with plush tannin as well as an
 ethereal elegance, a sublime personality, glorious sweet purity,

 This fabulous vineyard was never exploited until Stephan von
 Neipperg took it over in 1996. Situated on a perfectly exposed
 slope planted in limestone and clay, the vines average 50 years
 of age, and are cropped at low yields (in 2005, the yields were
 20 hectoliters per hectare). As do many of Bordeaux's avant
 garde garage wines, La Mondotte sees a Burgundian-styled pre-
 fermentation cold maceration, pigeage, and aging on its lees
 with no serious clarification prior to bottling. The inky/purple
 tinged 2005 reveals gorgeous aromas of roasted herbs, incense,
 Asian spices, graphite, coffee, and oodles of blackberry and
 black cherry fruit. The limestone soils provide a freshness
 and distinctive minerality. This powerful, multidimensional,
 full-bodied, rich St.-Emilion exhibits a hint of unctuosity
 (the wine is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabemet Franc),
 high tannins, fresh, lively acidity, and an exceptionally

 This estate has resurrected itself in a dramatic fashion thanks
 to the new proprietor, Monsieur Cuvelier and the hard work of
 his estate manager, Tony Balu, and a consulting team headed by
 Stephane Derenoncourt. The nearly 50-acre vineyard is planted
 with 85% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
 The 6,000-case 2005 may rival the spectacular 2003, which is
 currently outstanding. The black/purple-hued 2005 is a wine of
 extraordinary intensity displaying a beautiful floral nose of
 licorice, blueberry, creme de cassis, scorched earth, lead pencil,
 and pain grille notes. Given a Burgundian-like upbringing of
 malolactic in barrel and five months of lees aging with frequent
 batonnage, this beauty reached nearly 15% natural alcohol, and
 boasts enormous concentration, intensity, and richness. It should
 turn out to be a modem day classic.

 Former rugby player Eric Prissette consistently fashions excellent
 wines from various parcels in St.-Emilion. At the urging of
 consultant Stephane Derencourt, Prissette keeps crop yields low
 (27 hectoliters per hectare), and practices such winemaking
 techniques as cold soaks, month-long macerations, malolactic
 in barrel, and aging on lees. The 2,000 cases produced each
 year are gobbled up by enthusiastic consumers looking for wines
 that will be drinkable during their first 10-15 years of life.
 The 1995 is just now hitting its peak, so l suspect Rol Valentin's
 aging potential is even longer. The 2005 reveals sweet black
 cherry notes intermixed with espresso roast, black currants,
 dried herbs, and spice. The vintage's fresh acidity and
 moderately high tannin come through in the mouth, but they
 are well-integrated, and the wine's admirable concentration
 balances out the formidable structure. However, this effort
 will not be as charming in its youth as other recent vintages.

 the brilliant 2000. lt boasts an intense perfume of black cherries,

 and firm tannins, it is more classic than such hedonistic years

 The spectacular 2005 Bellevue should rival, possibly eclipse their
 2000. This 15.5-acre, south/southwest facing vineyard, near both
 Beau Sejour Becot and Beausejour-Duffau as well as Angelus, has
 been on a qualitative roll since Nicolas Thienpont and Stephane
 Derenoncourt began to manage the estate in 2000. A blend of 80%
 Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, it possesses an extraordinary
 mineral component along with huge, sweet blackberry and cassis
 notes with hints of raspberries and crushed rocks. A super
 black/purple color only hints at the wine's richness, massive
 concentration, and monster tannins. It represents the essence
 of terroir. Some people were surprised that Bellevue was not
 promoted in the new St.-Emilion classification, but they have
 only been making high quality wines since 2000. Prior to that,
 there was a succession of mediocrities. The 2,000-case 2005 came
 in at a whopping 14.5% natural alcohol, but the alcohol is barely
 noticeable due to the wine's richness.
